Some background

We originally planned to design and manufacture an autonomous drone. What better than to combine the challenges of aerospace engineering with darling autonomous computing. We met with Dieter Fox who had worked on drone projects with grad students in the past. He advised against starting with the drone project: mechanically they’re unwieldy and any small bug could crash your robot into a tree. Point taken. He politely suggested we look into RC cars. At first I thought he meant something like this:

But after researching the projects out there, we settled on a model inspired by the MIT RACECAR class. The 1/10 scale racecar will allow us a flexible platform for mounting sensors and chips. As such, we’ve begun to assemble necessary parts, contact partners for sponsorships and begin our research. The chassis arrives on Friday, so that’ll probably be our next post.
